The Futurism/Innovation education track at the upcoming 2019 ICMA Annual Conference is focused on how local governments are fostering innovation and adapting to challenges presented by the rapid pace of change in technology and society. In fact, one of the sessions in development for this track is titled “The Future of the Profession.” The purpose of this session is to present different perspectives on what the future holds for local government professionals. Importantly, the session will focus on skills necessary to handle these challenges and features a panel of professionals with three different perspectives on the future of the profession. Specifically, the session will feature a panel comprised of an experienced manager, an executive recruiter, and a leadership development professional.
Because the topic of this session covers such a wide-range of issues, we have designed a quick survey that we hope will allow the panelists to direct their comments towards the issues that are most important to you. In addition to getting your input on what future issues matter most to you, we are also interested in taking a look at how important issues for local government professionals have changed over time. In particular, we hope that looking back at issues that were at the forefront of public administration and local government management over the course of our member’s careers will provide perspective on the issues we face today and expect to face tomorrow.
